Context matters for the relationship between national identity and perceived democratic quality: National pride as a blind spot.

A growing body of evidence shows that national identity is positively related to attitudes toward societal and political systems. Yet much less is known about contextual factors that may modify this relationship. Distinguishing two facets of national identity-attachment and pride-and focusing on perceived democratic quality as a core system attitude, we test whether the links between these identity dimensions and system attitudes vary with the actual quality of democracy. Using data from 92 countries in the combined World Values Survey/European Values Study (N = 156,658), augmented with country-level indicators, multilevel structural equation models show that the association between national pride and perceived democratic quality is stronger in less democratic countries, whereas the effect of attachment is context-invariant. These findings suggest that national pride is associated with a positively biased perception of democratic quality that diverges from reality in illiberal or weak democracies, thereby complicating the predominantly positive framing of national pride in the social psychological literature on national identity.

Sharing conspiracy theories and staying in power: How leaders' false theories influence leadership perception.

Research shows that spreading conspiracy theories impacts leaders' reputations; yet, it remains unclear how leaders are viewed when their theories are debunked. Across four studies (N = 1437), we explored whether conveying a conspiracy theory, regardless of its accuracy, influences followers' impressions of leader dominance, competence and warmth. Participants evaluated leaders who either incorrectly perceived (false-positive) or incorrectly misperceived (false-negative) a conspiracy about the cause of a simulated crisis. During intergroup conflict, false-positive leaders were seen as less warm, similarly competent, yet more dominant than false-negative leaders. The dominance gap grew when the consequences of overlooking a conspiracy were more severe. Conversely, in the absence of conflict, false-positive leaders were perceived as less warm and competent than false-negative leaders. These findings support an error management approach to conspiracy theories: Leaders who spread conspiracy theories, even if later debunked, are still perceived as strong leaders, particularly in conflict settings.

Obesity and Its Association With Micronutrient Deficiency Among Mexican Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Context Obesity and micronutrient deficiencies in the pediatric population of Mexico pose significant public health challenges. However, the relationship between these two conditions is still being studied. Objective To systematically review evidence on the association between overweight and obesity and micronutrient deficiencies among Mexican children and adolescents. Data sources A systematic search was conducted in 13 databases and one search engine. Data analysis Sixteen studies met the eligibility criteria and were included in this review. A total of 20 043 participants were included across the included studies, and the results were highly varied, as not all micronutrients showed a significant deficit in the presence of obesity. Calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and vitamin E deficiencies were noted among participants with obesity; however, these did not significantly differ from those of individuals with normal weight. Current evidence suggests that Mexican children who have overweight or obesity are more likely to have zinc, iron, and vitamins D and B6 deficiency. A random-effects meta-analysis of 4 studies showed that children who have overweight or obesity were significantly more likely to have a deficit of vitamin D (odds ratio [OR], 1.84; 95% CI, 1.46-2.32), which was stronger for school-aged children (OR, 1.99; 95% CI, 1.56-2.55). Conclusion Current evidence suggests that Mexican children and adolescents who have overweight or obesity are more likely to experience vitamin D deficiency, and some evidence suggests that they are also prone to zinc, iron, and vitamin B6 deficiencies. For this reason, health-promotion and -prevention efforts must be comprehensive and address micronutrient deficiencies, common risk factors, and broader social determinants linked to noncommunicable diseases. Evolving SPECT-CT technology.

Both hardware and software developments have seen single photon emission CT (SPECT)/X-ray CT technology grow at a rapid rate. Such growth has been fuelled by the need for clinical applications and has provided inspiration for clinical developments, particularly with the expanding role of theranostics. Developments such as whole-body quantitative reconstructions, digital detectors, and recent multidetector 3D geometry have allowed SPECT to become comparable to PET on a number of fronts, with a particularly powerful role in biodistribution and dosimetry studies for both planning and evaluating radionuclide therapy. Whilst there remain fundamental challenges for SPECT such the limited spatial resolution and sensitivity, the unique opportunity to image long-lived radioisotopes and simultaneous multi-tracer studies, together with easily accessible equipment, makes SPECT/CT a valuable clinical asset. This review discusses developments in SPECT/CT technology and their clinical impact.

A Primate-Specific lncRNA LINC01021 Contributes to Cellular and Organismal Aging via DAZAP1-Dependent Destabilization of RBMX.

Aging is characterized by progressive physiological decline and age-related pathologies, yet the molecular determinants underlying lineage- and species-specific aging traits remain poorly understood. Although protein-coding regulators have dominated aging research, the contribution of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), particularly primate-specific lncRNAs, has not been systematically explored. Here, through evolutionary screening and cross-species aging-associated analyses, we identified a set of primate-specific lncRNAs (including LINC01021, CTC-575 l10.1, CTA-150C2.13, and RP11-305F18.1, etc.) associated with human aging, and we functionally characterized LINC01021 as a representative candidate to assess their causal involvement. In human cells, LINC01021 promotes cellular senescence, whereas its silencing attenuates senescence-associated phenotypes. Mechanistically, LINC01021 is predominantly located in the nucleus, where it facilitates DAZAP1-dependent destabilization of RBMX mRNA, leading to activation of the P53 pathway and induction of canonical senescence features. At the organismal level, ectopic expression of human LINC01021 in mice contributes to aging-like phenotypes, including increased frailty and impaired motor coordination. Together, these findings implicate primate-specific lncRNAs in lineage-restricted aging and highlight an evolutionarily recent regulatory layer that may modulate aging trajectories.

Study of prompt gamma and neutron emission for real-time range verification in proton and carbon-ion therapy.

Background Accurate range verification is crucial in hadrontherapy to fully exploit the ballistic advantages of charged particles and prevent damage to healthy tissues. Among the proposed approaches, prompt gamma imaging (PGI) has emerged as an effective technique for real-time monitoring, but its performance is limited by the intense neutron background generated during irradiation, especially with carbon-ions. Purpose This work presents a Monte Carlo study performed with the FLUKA code to investigate prompt gamma and neutron emission in proton and carbon-ion therapy. A prototype detection system based on a knife-edge collimator coupled to a pixelated LYSO scintillator was simulated to evaluate its capability for range verification. The aim is to quantify how neutron fields and neutron induced signals bias or degrade range related quantities, and how these effects differ between proton and carbon-ion beams. Methods The analysis includes the characterization of prompt gamma energy spectra and spatial profiles, the assessment of neutron fields within a treatment room, and the decomposition of the detector signal into primary gammas, secondary gammas, and neutrons. Results Results show that prompt gamma profiles correlate well with the Bragg peak position, particularly within the 3-7 MeV energy window, while carbon ions exhibit higher prompt gamma yields but also significantly stronger neutron backgrounds compared to protons. Detector simulations highlight the impact of neutron capture on lutetium, producing distinct peaks that must be accounted for in the detector signal analysis. The fall-off retrieval precision (FRP) analysis indicates that the distal fall-off of prompt gamma profiles can be used to estimate the Bragg peak position, while secondary radiation components introduce additional fluctuations that affect the achievable precision, particularly for carbon-ion beams. Conclusions The study provides a detailed characterization of prompt gamma and neutron contributions in proton and carbon-ion therapy and highlights the main physical factors affecting PGI-based range monitoring, particularly in the presence of neutron-induced backgrounds. These results provide useful insights for the design and optimization of prompt gamma detection systems in clinical applications.

Characteristics, management, and outcomes of patients with VIPoma-A retrospective analysis of the ENETS database.

Introduction VIPoma is an extremely rare functioning pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor. Therefore, data regarding treatment and outcome are very limited. Aim (s): This multicenter study aimed to analyze clinical characteristics, real-world management, and outcomes of patients with VIPoma. Methods Patients with VIPoma treated in a 20-year period at 14 referral centers for neuroendocrine tumors (NET) were collected in the ENETS Database. Clinical characteristics, therapeutic interventions, and outcomes were analyzed retrospectively. Disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Results Of 70 patients, 59 (54% male) with a median age of 55 years were included. Forty-six (78%) patients were diagnosed due to the classical watery diarrhea-hypokalemia-achlorhydria (WDHA) syndrome, and 40 (68%) presented with distant metastases at diagnosis. Fifty-two (88%) had serum VIP levels >2 times the upper normal limit and the median Ki-67 index was 5% (range 1%-40%). Surgery of the primary VIPoma was performed in 32 (54%), with curative intent in 22 (37%). In patients with stage I-III disease (n = 19), long-term cure was achieved in only 26% (5/19), with a median DFS of 81 (95%-CI: 1-215) months and 10-year OS of 78% (95%-CI: 61%-100%). In stage IV patients (n = 53, 40 at diagnosis, 13 disease progression), the sequence and type of 354 treatment lines varied, while SSA (n = 77, 22%), loco-regional liver-directed therapy (n = 72, 20%), and chemotherapy (n = 69, 19%) were most often applied. Median OS for patients with stage IV at diagnosis was 142 (95%-CI: 87-not available (NA)) months with 10-year survival of 50% (95%-CI: 35%-73%). Conclusion Patients with VIPoma treated at NET centers have relatively favorable survival, even with distant metastases at diagnosis, although long-term cure rates remain low.

Dietary Phytochemical Index and Its Relationship With Diminished Ovarian Reserve: Evidence From a Case-Control Study.

Introduction Diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) represents a significant contributor to female infertility and adverse reproductive outcomes. Although diet may play a role, the specific impact of phytochemical-rich dietary patterns remains underexplored. So, we aimed to investigate the association between adherence to a dietary phytochemical index (DPI) and the likelihood of DOR among women attending fertility clinics. Methods This case-control study enrolled 370 women, comprising 120 individuals diagnosed with DOR and 250 age- and body mass index (BMI)-matched controls with normal ovarian reserve. A validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was applied to assess dietary intakes and, accordingly, DPI was calculated as the proportion of total energy intake obtained from phytochemical-abundant foods. Antral follicle count (AFC) and serum anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) measurements were utilized as indicators of ovarian reserve. The association between DPI and the odds of DOR was investigated using multivariable logistic regression models. Results Our findings showed that higher DPI was associated with a reduced odds of DOR (Q4 vs. Q1 OR: 0.79; 95% CI: 0.55-0.93; p-trend = 0.010). After adjustment for physical activity and energy intake, the association remained significant (OR: 0.80; 95% CI: 0.54-0.95; p-trend = 0.033). In the fully adjusted model, which included additional adjustments for fat mass and body mass index, women in the highest DPI quartile had 27% lower odds of DOR compared to those in the lowest quartile (OR: 0.73; 95% CI: 0.42-0.97; p-trend = 0.02). Besides, in the control group, AFC differed significantly across DPI quartiles (p  Conclusion Our findings suggest that a phytochemical-rich diet may help reduce the odds of DOR, highlighting the role of diet in reproductive health. However, further prospective studies and mechanistic research are warranted to confirm these results and clarify underlying pathways.

Long-Term Trends in Prescribing of Etizolam for Hypnotic Use in a Japanese University Hospital.

Objectives Etizolam is a short-acting thienodiazepine widely prescribed for anxiety and insomnia despite increasing concerns regarding dependence and guideline recommendations limiting long-term benzodiazepine use. This study examined long-term prescribing trends of etizolam compared with benzodiazepine and non-benzodiazepine hypnotics. Methods We conducted a retrospective database study including 16,886,524 prescriptions issued between April 2001 and March 2022 at a tertiary university hospital in Japan. Seventeen hypnotic agents were identified (10 benzodiazepines and 7 non-benzodiazepines). Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with prescribing hypnotic etizolam versus non-benzodiazepine hypnotics. Results Among 124,179 etizolam prescriptions, 83,927 (67.6%) were issued for hypnotic use. Although the absolute number of prescriptions declined over time, the proportion prescribed for hypnotic use remained stable. The ratio of hypnotic etizolam prescriptions to non-benzodiazepine hypnotics was higher in internal medicine than in psychiatry. In multivariable analysis, prescribing hypnotic etizolam was independently associated with internal medicine (adjusted OR 1.57), female sex, outpatient status, younger age, and earlier calendar year. Conclusions Despite declining overall use, etizolam continues to be prescribed as a hypnotic, particularly in non-psychiatric settings. These findings highlight the persistence of specialty-specific prescribing patterns and underscore the importance of targeted educational and policy interventions to promote safer hypnotic prescribing practices.

Formulation of Peptide-Based Nanoparticles Using a Microfluidic Device.

Peptide-based nanoparticles (PBN) have emerged as a promising alternative to lipid nanoparticles (LNP) for nucleic acid delivery and efficient cellular uptake. In this study, we evaluated the formulation of WRAP5 (W- and R-rich amphipathic peptide 5)-based PBN using a microfluidic device and assessed the impact of key process parameters, flow rate ratio (FRR), total flow rate (TFR), and mixing channel design, on nanoparticle characteristics. Across 72 formulations encapsulating small interfering RNA (siRNA) or plasmid DNA (pDNA), dynamic light scattering revealed consistent mean sizes ranging from 50 to 70 nm, with a low polydispersity index (PdI < 0.22), independent of FRR, TFR, or mixer type. Stability studies demonstrated that siRNA-loaded PBN exhibited moderate size increases during storage at 4°C, whereas pDNA-loaded PBN remained highly stable for up to 70 days. Biological assays confirmed robust activity: WRAP5:siRNA PBN achieved approximately 50% CDK4 silencing in GIST-T1 cells, and WRAP5:pDNA PBN mediated efficient mCHERRY expression in HeLa cells, regardless of formulation method or storage duration. These findings highlight the robustness and scalability of WRAP5-based PBN, contrasting with LNP systems that require stringent control of FRR and TFR, and partially underscore their potential for nucleic acid delivery applications.
